No fewer than thirteen passengers killed and ninety-eight wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major government projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” declared the country's president.

The leader announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's developmental goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The development of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a significant increase of its duties in public works. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised ongoing concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party urged an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This pause was proposed until the completion of a full safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been running in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and operation of these strategic projects.
