Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second Ashes series against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

However, following the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation after England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Before this match, Stokes said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There is no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
